A slow moving novel, but still rather beautiful. Set on a remote Scottish island, inhabited by a single family responsible for the upkeep of a lighthouse, Elphinstone created a story of family drama, potential love, and life on the brink of change. The Geddes family are facing eviction once surveyors finish their work on the island, eventually replacing the aging lighthouse. For a family that has never lived on the mainland, this concept is daunting. It took a while to really get involved in the story, but once I did, I was really swept up in the emotion. It was worth sticking to it!
