The World is Our Classroom

Today, at the end of a great week, I took my student to one of his favourite places - the library.  But not just any library.  It was the main branch of the library in downtown.  Who knew that could be such an exciting place?  We found some great books and some of his favourite movies.  We took elevator rides; we practiced asking for help by speaking to librarians.  When it was over, we bought some hot chocolate to take to the park to drink and bird watch.  And there to my lovely surprise was this beautiful creature!

I kinda think Ms. Frizzle had it right when she would take her class on field trips with her Magic School Bus.  There is so much to see and learn.  There are things that can't be taught by looking at pictures at a table.  Learning means exploring.  Teaching means lighting a fire.

'Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.' W.B. Yeats.
