A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews

Oh this was painful... I got 3/4 of the way through and had to put it down and away.  Just the sight of the book on the bedside table made me discouraged about finishing it so I didn't.  Someone had written about another Canlit novel - I can't even remember which novel anymore - that it was 'typical' Canlit, meaning it was dark, complicated, parabolic, etc and so on.  For a while now I have been trying to decide if those words really describe typical Canlit, or if we can be as diverse as the American market.  But if the world were to view Canadians by literature such as this... hmm... typical it is.
