Unless by Carol Shields

A rather brilliant novel by one of Canada's leading lady authors, Unless made me feel as though I was taking a master class in how to be a novelist and a woman.  Shields makes you feel as though every decision you make has repercussions - a butterfly effect.  One of the reviewers of this novel compares Shields with the likes of Jane Austen, and although I won't go that far, she does handle modern domesticity with tragic poise.
