For this week's entry, I went looking through a list of Canadian artists and stopped at the first woman I saw: Elizabeth Forbes. She was born in Ottawa, but most of her artistic career was in England. I can really see, however, a Canadian look to her work. The picture below of the schoolhouse in full session looks like a snap shot of any rural, Canadian schoolhouse from the 1800s. Most of her painting subjects are children in their natural environment - which is still a new theme in the late 1800s when she was painting prolifically.
