Isobel Gunn by Audrey Thomas

This short Canadian novel is the fictionalization of a very small part of the Canadian history books: the story of a woman from the Scottish isles of Orkney, who dressed as a man and joined the Hudson Bay company.  Although it took a little bit of work to get into it, I really, really liked it.  It wasn't what I expected.  It was told from the point of view of a man who grew up knowing her family, and then through fate became a school teacher at the Canadian fort where Isobel was stationed.  To me, it really made the history of the very first days of our country come to life.  I hope many other read this great story.
